2025, February 3

With an investment of €6 million, AJ Power Corporate Group has installed battery energy storage systems (BESS) at three of its large-scale solar parks in Valmiera, Aizkraukle, and Ilūkste. These systems will be integrated into the national power grid and are set to begin operation in the coming months, shortly after the planned disconnection of the Baltic power system from the BRELL network.
The installed BESS will provide a capacity of 9 megawatts (MW) and an energy storage capacity of 18 megawatt-hours (MWh). The amount of electricity charged and discharged daily by the system will exceed the average daily consumption of 7,000 households. These storage systems will help stabilize electricity prices in Latvia by storing excess electricity from the grid when supply exceeds demand and releasing it back when shortages arise. This will ensure a balanced energy production and consumption system.
Roberts Samtiņš, CEO of AJ Power Corporate Group, commented: "The year 2025 will be particularly challenging for Latvia’s energy sector. The planned disconnection of the Baltic states from the BRELL network in February will create a need for additional balancing capacities. For this reason, we began designing and deploying BESS systems last year to quickly adapt to these changes and participate in the emerging balancing market. We continue to invest in new energy and renewable solutions in Latvia, and this year, we aim to expand our presence in export markets as well."

The BESS solution consists of technical equipment installation and the development of an advanced control system.
The entire project—from design to construction—was carried out by AJ Power Corporate Group, which will also fully manage the operation of these systems, both for its own infrastructure and for client-deployed BESS. All equipment has been sourced from EU-certified, reputable manufacturers with experience in similar projects across Europe.
AJ Power Corporate Group has developed the new energy management system in collaboration with artificial intelligence (AI) solutions provider Apply. The system will monitor and control energy flows, track market fluctuations, and, based on predefined algorithms, dynamically adjust system operations—charging or discharging electricity to the grid as needed.
The BESS locations have been strategically chosen within AJ Power Corporate Group’s existing solar power plant projects, where the necessary infrastructure has already been developed. In 2023 and 2024, AJ Power Corporate Group successfully completed seven large-scale solar energy projects in Valmiera, Brocēni, Dobele, Cēsis, Aizkraukle, Ilūkste, and Jelgava, with a total installed capacity of 30 MW.
