The AJ Power Corporate Group has successfully qualified and commenced operations in the Baltic balancing market, delivering balancing services to the transmission system operator (TSO), Augstsprieguma tīkls. AJ Power is the first balancing service provider in the Baltic region to participate in this market using a solution that combines solar power plants with battery energy storage systems (BESS), managed through TRON – an energy management system developed by AJ Power, originally built for internal use and now available to other energy market participants.
The goal of balancing services is to maintain a continuous balance between electricity supply and demand, reduce the risk of grid overloads, and ensure secure electricity delivery. Participation in the balancing market supports the transmission system operator in maintaining the stability of the Baltic power system while also creating new business opportunities for energy producers ‒ enabling more efficient use of energy assets and the generation of additional revenue streams.
To enter the balancing market, AJ Power installed BESS units with a total capacity of 9 MW and a storage volume of 18 MWh at its managed solar power plants in Valmiera, Aizkraukle, and Ilūkste. These assets are managed by the TRON energy management system, which provides integrated control over electricity production, trading, and balancing operations. This is the first solution of its kind in Latvia that already enables companies to provide balancing services.

“The Baltic energy market is evolving rapidly, and local market leaders must demonstrate their ability to move towards a smarter and more dynamic energy environment ‒ including active participation in the balancing market. This engagement not only maximizes the utilization of energy assets and increases revenue, but also strengthens the local power system. The growing demand for high-precision energy management solutions is reflected in the increasing interest in TRON from market participants and partners,” emphasizes Roberts Samtiņš, CEO of AJ Power Corporate Group.
AJ Power’s timely qualification to provide balancing services ensures that its available energy assets can be actively involved in these markets. It also allows the company to apply and refine trading strategies for optimal asset management and profitability. These field-tested strategies will be extended to AJ Power clients, enabling broader access to the balancing market and reinforcing AJ Power’s role as a modern energy partner.
“To ensure the lowest possible procurement costs for balancing capacity ‒ required for power system balancing and frequency control ‒ a unified regional balancing capacity market has been introduced in the Baltics since February. New service providers are gradually entering the market, increasing competition and lowering costs. Therefore, the entry of an experienced energy company like AJ Power is a valuable contribution to market development and a benefit to all system users. Currently, more than ten market participants have qualified to provide balancing services in thermal power plants, hydroelectric stations, solar parks, wind farms, and battery systems. We encourage other market participants to join the balancing market, diversify and improve their revenue models, and strengthen grid reliability,” notes Gatis Junghāns, Member of the Management Board at Augstsprieguma tīkls.

AJ Power developed its TRON energy management system in collaboration with the Computer Vision Development Center Apply. TRON is currently the only operational system of its kind in Latvia, fully functioning and technically integrated with the transmission system operator (TSO), Augstsprieguma tīkls. This integration enables effective participation of BESS and other generation assets in the provision of regulation services. The implementation required extensive technical alignment and complex coordination. Today, TRON has established itself as a market leader, ensuring strong competitive advantage for both AJ Power and its partners.
To strengthen the stability of the Baltic energy system and support business expansion, AJ Power has invested more than €6.5 million this year in the deployment and development of large-scale BESS and energy management systems (EMS).
