Guarantee of Origin: a simple way to make electricity consumption truly green

In the energy sector, we often talk about investments in infrastructure, new solar or wind farms, and technological developments. However, there is also a simpler tool that allows you to immediately reduce the environmental impact of your electricity consumption.

Guarantees of Origin (GO) are internationally recognized certificates that confirm that a specific amount of electricity consumed has been produced from renewable energy sources. The system operates within a single European accounting mechanism, ensuring transparent and verifiable accounting of the origin of electricity. In practice, this means a simple and reliable way for companies, municipalities, and government agencies to prove that their electricity consumption is based on renewable energy sources.

Demand for green energy is growing

Latvian electricity market data shows a clear trend. In 2025, the number of certificates of origin used in Latvia increased by 42%, indicating a growing interest in green energy and more sustainable consumption.

This dynamic reflects a broader shift in energy consumption culture. Consumers increasingly want not only to use electricity, but also to clearly prove its origin. This is becoming important for investors and financiers, as well as customers and business partners.

Reputation and financial accessibility

Sustainability factors are increasingly being incorporated into financial and investment decisions. Banks, investors, and international partners assess companies' ability to manage their impact on the environment and climate. Certificates of origin for electricity are one of the simplest ways to document this action.

It allows companies to prove that the electricity they consume is produced from renewable energy sources. For local governments and public authorities, it is a tool that helps demonstrate responsible resource management and strengthens trust in the eyes of the public and local businesses.

In many projects, especially those involving European Union funding, increasing attention is being paid to sustainability indicators and their verifiability. Guarantees of origin provide a simple and internationally recognized way to document the use of green electricity and include this information in project documentation and reports.

Importantly, guarantees of origin also allow green energy to be attributed to electricity that has already been consumed. This means that organizations can also make their historical consumption greener and use this information in sustainability reports or project documentation.

No investment in infrastructure

Unlike infrastructure projects, the use of green energy does not require investment in technology or changes to the electricity supply system. It is an administratively simple tool that allows organizations to quickly transition to documented greener electricity consumption.

Furthermore, the current market situation makes this solution particularly affordable. The costs often amount to less than half a percent of the electricity bill, while the reputation and sustainability benefits can be significantly greater.
