From 2024
Natural Resources Tax

From July 1, 2024, the natural resource tax will also be applied to textiles. Natural resources tax will be applied to companies that sell textile products produced or imported in Latvia.

AJ Power Recycling provides companies with 100% exemption from natural resource tax, providing textile waste management and recycling.

We believe in the power of sustainability!

In order to promote textile sorting and recycling possibilities in Latvia, “AJ Power Recycling” is involved in the development of the textile sorting system, ensuring the availability of sorting, as well as the responsible collection and management of textile materials.

Why should we sort textiles?
  1. In addition to pollution from plastic, cardboard, glass, metal and hazardous waste, recent trends show that rates of textile pollution continue to rise.
  2. Influenced by the fast fashion industry, cheap clothing is produced in large volumes, fuelled by short-lived trends and low-quality materials.
  3. Currently, only part of the citizens’ clothes and footwear is safely and properly recycled.
  4. Sorting and recycling of textiles can significantly reduce the environmental impact of the fashion industry.

What can be sorted?

All kinds of clothing
Footwear
Bags and belts
Home textiles (curtains, blankets, sheets, tablecloths)

How to sort correctly?

In order for shoes and clothes to be valid for recycling, it is essential that the sorted textiles have not been in contact with chemicals, including motor oils and household chemicals, and have not been torn. They must be dry and mould-free. Items made from other materials, such as rubber boots, plastic ski boots and soft toys, cannot be sorted together with textiles.

It is important to remember — the textile container is not intended for waste!

One bag of household waste can spoil the entire contents of the container. That is why we suggest that you put only clean, not torn and recyclable items in a tightly tied bag into the textile sorting containers.

What happens to the textiles after they are collected?

01

We deliver textiles to the sorting point and re-sort them.

02

We analyse the content and quality of the collected textiles.

03

For materials that are in good condition, we are looking for opportunities to reuse them here in Latvia or in developing countries around the world.

04

For textiles that are not suitable for secondary use, we look for recycling options.

Facts and figures

The amount of textile products imported into Latvia is quite high —
it is 46
times higher than the amount of waste
collected in Latvia.

More than 26.7 thousand tonnes of textile waste represent part of the unsorted household waste, which then ends up in landfill.

1200+ tonnes of clothes, shoes, accessories and home textiles have already been responsibly placed in purple textile containers.

Recycling one tonne of textiles
can save up to 20,000 litres of water and prevent 2.1 tonnes of CO2
emissions.

Where to sort textiles?

Discover how you can make more sustainable choices.

  • Use for as long as possible!

Prior to buying some new clothes, make sure that your closet does not have a high-quality, but forgotten piece of clothing that’s still in fashion! With proper care, clothing can keep looking like new for a long time.

  • Shop sustainably!

Choose clothes made from sustainable materials or buy used clothes to reduce your environmental impact.

  • Recycle textile waste!

Unnecessary clothing, shoes and other textile products (home textiles, bags and belts) are handed over in specialised containers, thus ensuring their reuse or recycling, instead of ending up among general waste.

  • Share!

Share the message and encourage others to make more sustainable choices.

By doing so, we not only reduce waste and conserve resources, but also promote ethical values and sustainability in the fashion industry.
